Italy's Standoff with Russia: Diplomatic Tensions Rise
The Italian government has summoned the Russian ambassador after President Sergio Mattarella was listed by Moscow among Western leaders accused of anti-Russian sentiment. The list is seen as a propaganda effort by Italy, which condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Italy's political ties with Russia have worsened since the invasion.

Italy has summoned the Russian ambassador in protest after President Sergio Mattarella was named on a list compiled by Moscow accusing Western leaders of anti-Russian sentiment. President Mattarella's inclusion was based on comments he made comparing Russia's invasion of Ukraine to Nazi Germany's aggressive wars.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed the list as a propaganda move, following its release on July 24 by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The list, alleging 'hate speech' against Russia, also features prominent Western figures including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized Italy's condemnation of Russia's actions in Ukraine during a meeting with Russian ambassador Aleksej Paramonov. Italy, having had traditionally strong ties with Russia, now firmly supports Ukraine against Russian aggression.
