The Uttar Pradesh Police is set to revolutionize its approach to tackling cybercrime, unveiling key reforms to improve efficiency and responsiveness. Among the significant changes is the removal of the previous Rs 5 lakh threshold for registering FIRs in online fraud cases, as announced by Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna.
In an effort to strengthen the response framework, a specialized call centre for the National Cybercrime Helpline has been established in Kalli Paschim. This new facility, staffed by 94 police personnel, aims to provide round-the-clock assistance to victims, replacing an earlier 20-seat centre with a more robust setup of 30 lines.
Further reforms include the proposal to amend the IT Act to empower sub-inspectors to investigate cyber offences, potentially accelerating the FIR registration process. The state plans to appoint 'Cyber Commandos' across each zone to bolster investigations. Over 11,600 police officers have completed training to enhance digital competency, with Cyber Awareness Days set to promote security literacy among the public.
