Supreme Court Stays Bombay HC Verdict on Kanjurmarg Land
The Supreme Court stayed the Bombay High Court's decision that had restored a 120-hectare land in Kanjurmarg, Mumbai, as a protected forest. The land, previously used as a landfill, was once cleared for forest status by error. The state's appeal argued for its landfill use.

In a significant judicial development, the Supreme Court has put a hold on the Bombay High Court's verdict that returned 120 hectares of land in Mumbai's Kanjurmarg area to protected forest status. This decision, now reversed, had initially permitted the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to utilize the space as a garbage landfill.
Previously, the Bombay High Court had annulled the de-notification of these 119.91 hectares, classifying it again as a protected forest area. The civic body had planned to continue using this land as a landfill, an intention now legally complicated by the court's intervention.
The state's position, presented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, argued that the protected forest classification was a mistake, meant for rectification to facilitate its landfill use. The court now awaits further arguments on the matter.
