Police resorted to firing teargas shells to re-establish law and order after a clash erupted between two groups on Friday afternoon in Yavat, located in Pune's Daund tehsil. The conflict was reportedly sparked by an objectionable post on social media, an official stated.
The controversial social media post, allegedly uploaded by a youth from one community, incited anger among members of another group. The situation escalated as an irate mob vandalized properties and structures belonging to the opposite community. They also engaged in stone-pelting and set a motorcycle on fire, prompting police to intervene with teargas to disperse the mob and restore order. The youth who uploaded the post has been detained, confirmed the official.
Sandip Singh Gill, Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural), arrived at the scene and appealed for calm, advising citizens against spreading rumors. A significant police presence has been established to prevent further unrest.
