Controversy has erupted over detention centers in Delhi and Gurugram, with CPI (ML) Liberation MP Raja Ram Singh questioning their legality. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah dated July 31, Singh expressed concern regarding reports of illegal detention of Bengali-speaking migrants from West Bengal and Assam.
Singh's letter seeks clarification on the legal basis for these centers and demands data on detainees, including the number of verified Indian citizens released. He highlighted alarming issues such as arbitrary detention, denial of legal aid, food, and medical assistance, and allegations of document confiscation.
Singh emphasized serious human rights violations, noting complaints of torture and extortion. He questioned whether speaking Bengali is now considered criminal in India, raising concerns about targeting based on language and religion. Calling for an urgent government response, Singh urged immediate cessation of unconstitutional detentions.
