As a powerful tribute to India’s 78th Independence Day and the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the country’s trusted state-run telecom operator, has announced the launch of its innovative ‘Freedom Plan’. For just ₹1, citizens can enjoy BSNL’s fully indigenous 4G services free for 30 days, reaffirming the government’s commitment to self-reliance and digital empowerment.
This limited-period offer is more than a promotional gesture—it is a national milestone celebrating India’s entry into the exclusive club of countries with an indigenously developed and deployed 4G telecom stack.
What the Freedom Plan Offers
The ₹1 Freedom Plan allows users to experience high-quality mobile services for a full month, including:
-
✅ Unlimited voice calls (Local and STD, across all networks)
-
✅ 2 GB of high-speed data per day (post which speed is reduced)
-
✅ 100 SMS per day
-
✅ A free BSNL SIM card, provided at the time of enrollment
This plan is aimed at allowing users across India—especially those in underserved or remote areas—to test BSNL’s new 4G network infrastructure, which is being deployed nationwide under the Government of India’s Make-in-India initiative.
A Landmark in Indigenous Telecom Technology
Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, hailed the launch of the Freedom Plan as a defining moment for India’s telecom sector. “With BSNL’s 4G—designed, developed, and deployed under the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission—we are proud to be putting India among a select group of nations that have built their own telecom stack,” he said.
The network has been created using Indian hardware and software vendors under a 100% domestic procurement model. This includes core network elements, radio access networks (RAN), and even network management systems, all sourced from Indian firms and public sector partners.
The CMD further announced that BSNL is currently in the process of rolling out 100,000 4G sites across the country, in collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics). The infrastructure is aimed at covering rural, remote, and economically weaker regions, in addition to urban markets.
A Pillar of Digital India and National Security
This indigenous 4G initiative supports India’s digital sovereignty and cyber-security objectives, as foreign network dependencies are reduced. With BSNL playing a leading role in secure, affordable, and high-quality mobile communication, the Freedom Plan is as much about technology as it is about trust and national pride.
“Users will not just be trying a network—they’ll be experiencing the future of Indian connectivity,” said Shri Ravi. “This is about empowering citizens with a secure, scalable, and homegrown mobile experience.”
How to Avail the Plan
Indian citizens can enroll for the ₹1 Freedom Plan by:
-
Visiting the nearest BSNL Customer Service Centre (CSC)
-
Approaching a BSNL-authorized retailer
-
Dialing the toll-free helpline: 1800-180-1503
Users will receive a new BSNL SIM card and benefit from 30 days of uninterrupted services without any hidden fees or charges. Post the trial, users can choose to migrate to one of BSNL’s regular prepaid or postpaid plans.
Industry and Public Response
Telecom experts and industry observers have hailed BSNL’s Freedom Plan as a strategic and symbolic initiative, bridging the gap between technological independence and citizen outreach. It also provides a level playing field for public sector competition in a market long dominated by private telecom giants.
The announcement has garnered interest from students, remote workers, low-income households, and even defense and paramilitary users—sectors where affordability, trust, and secure communication are crucial.
A Step Toward 5G and Beyond
With the Freedom Plan serving as a large-scale stress test for its infrastructure, BSNL is expected to build on this momentum with plans to launch indigenous 5G in select corridors by 2026, based on the same Make-in-India framework.
This initiative also aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, where every citizen is digitally connected and economically empowered through secure and inclusive digital ecosystems.
