The Telangana High Court has quashed the defamation case launched by a BJP leader against Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy concerning his campaign speech during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The court sided with Reddy, dismissing the case which accused him of defaming the BJP by stating it would alter the Constitution and end reservations if voted into power. The court maintained that political speeches, known for exaggeration, require a stricter burden of proof for defamation claims.
The complaint, filed by BJP's state General Secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu, was deemed unauthorized, weakening the case. Emphasizing that political rhetoric is often hyperbolic, the court granted Reddy exemption from appearing in trial proceedings.
