On Saturday, Supreme Court judge Justice Manmohan urged for increased awareness about the rights of individuals with disabilities. At a conference titled 'Judging and lawyering at the margins: disability rights and beyond', he highlighted the importance of viewing disability rights from a rights-based perspective rather than as charity.
Justice Manmohan stressed that while courts can issue verdicts, it is imperative for other state organs to play their roles efficiently. He pointed out the challenges courts face due to overflowing dockets and emphasized that expecting the judiciary to prioritize every issue is unrealistic.
The judge called for a shift in mindset across the legislature and executive, emphasizing that disability rights must be treated as obligations, not benevolence. He argued that societal empathy is essential in ensuring compliance and fostering a collaborative effort from all state components.
