The Maharashtra government has granted a fresh extension to the inquiry commission tasked with investigating the violence on January 1, 2018, at Koregaon Bhima in Pune district. This extension allows the commission additional time until October 31 to complete and submit its findings.
Initially, the commission, set up to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, had been given a deadline of July 31. Officials have confirmed the new timeline to provide a comprehensive and detailed report.
The violence erupted near the Koregaon Bhima war memorial, significant to Dalits as it marks the historical defeat of the Peshwa army by British forces, including Dalit soldiers, in 1818. The inquiry is led by retired Chief Justice J N Patel and former Maharashtra chief secretary Sumit Mullick.
