In Odisha's Balasore district, two student leaders were detained on Monday for allegedly filming a viral video of a 20-year-old woman setting herself on fire at a college. The authorities have charged the duo with abetment to suicide.
Initially lauded for his actions, Jyoti Prakash Biswal was believed to have tried to rescue the woman, who self-immolated on July 12. Subsequent investigations revealed that both Biswal and fellow detainee Subhra Sambait Nayak were reportedly aware of her intentions, resulting in their arrest.
Despite efforts to save her, the woman succumbed to her injuries two days later. The case has sparked political accusations, with the opposition alleging the involvement of ABVP members. The ABVP has yet to respond to these claims.
