Ukraine announced on Monday that it has charged six people, including a lawmaker and a government official, with embezzling funds intended for the purchase of drones and jamming equipment for military use.

The country, heavily reliant on drones and electronic warfare systems to combat Moscow's invasion, is cracking down on corruption as a pivotal measure for its European Union aspirations. On Saturday, anti-corruption authorities uncovered a scheme where kickbacks were provided for purchases at inflated rates, implicating a legislator, a current and a dismissed official, a National Guard commander, and two businessmen.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau described the operation as an organized crime group misappropriating defense funds in 2024–2025, with bribes accounting for about 30% of contract values. A drone contract, inflated by $80,000, was initially valued at $240,000. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who recently reinstated the independence of two anti-corruption agencies, commended the charges after consultations with agency leaders. Besides the lawmaker, those charged include a former governor and regional leader, the head of a city military administration, a National Guard commander, and a drone company director and owner.
