Russia's Tightening Grip: The Struggle for Internet Freedom
Russia is intensifying efforts to control its internet, adopting restrictive laws and targeting both foreign platforms and VPNs. As authorities block major social media and push domestic platforms, experts fear a complete internet isolation may occur. In Russia, navigating the internet has become a perilous task. Authorities are implementing long-term strategies to seize control of the online domain. They have passed stringent laws and banned websites and platforms that refuse to comply, evolving the landscape into a monitored and manipulated digital sphere.
Despite possibilities to bypass these restrictions using virtual private networks (VPNs), the authorities have blocked many of these services too. In a recent escalation, cellphone internet services experienced shutdowns, accompanied by laws penalizing users for accessing unwanted content.
President Vladimir Putin has directed efforts to restrict foreign internet services and instructed officials to identify platforms from hostile countries. As the technological blockade strengthens, rights advocates express concern over the scale and potential complete online isolation in Russia.
