Odisha Paves Way for Women Night Shift Workers
The Odisha government has allowed women to work night shifts in commercial settings, under mandatory written consent. Guidelines ensure at least three women on night duty, transportation with GPS, and security measures including CCTV. Critics argue it shifts protection responsibility onto female workers.

The Odisha government has officially sanctioned the employment of women during night shifts in various commercial establishments, contingent upon mandatory written consent. The move, as per the Labour and Employees' State Insurance Department's guidelines, aims to boost job opportunities for women while ensuring essential safety measures are in place.
According to the directive, commercial entities must ensure at least three women employees are present on night shifts. Furthermore, transportation facilities equipped with GPS tracking for women's safety are required. Employers are obligated to provide adequate amenities like toilets, drinking water, and proper lighting with CCTV surveillance for enhanced security.
However, the decision has drawn criticism from opposition parties, such as the BJD, which claims it deflects governmental responsibilities onto women workers, necessitating self-protection. This decision follows recent amendments to the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, reflecting an ongoing dialogue about women's safety and employment rights.
