Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was granted bail on Wednesday by an MP-MLA court in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, over a defamation case linked to comments he allegedly made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a 2018 rally. The case was lodged by Pratap Kumar, who claimed the remarks were intended to tarnish Shah's reputation.
Gandhi arrived at the court at approximately 10.55 am, adhering to a directive from the Jharkhand High Court. His request for bail was approved, with the Congress MP's counsel stating they would proceed with the next steps. Initially, Gandhi had approached the high court on June 2 to challenge a special court's prior order mandating his appearance on June 26.
The high court accepted Gandhi's plea to postpone his court appearance to August 6. Gandhi was in Jharkhand to attend the funeral of former chief minister Shibu Soren and traveled by helicopter from Ranchi to Chaibasa. A temporary helipad had been set up at Tata College Ground for his arrival.
