In a significant development, charges have been formally placed against all 11 accused in the July 2024 Hathras stampede case. This tragic event claimed the lives of 121 people during a religious satsang led by self-proclaimed godman Surajpal, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari alias Bhole Baba.
Wednesday's courtroom proceedings have transitioned the case into the evidence stage, signaling the commencement of trial hearings slated for August 18. Defence counsel Munna Singh Pundeer confirmed that all accused are currently out on bail, and the prosecution is set to present its witnesses as the trial moves forward.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, the key preacher remains uncharged. The accusations, grounded in the SIT charge sheet, include culpable homicide and conspiracy under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Criminal Law Amendment Act. Pundeer has contended that the case is a result of police negligence, labeling it a 'fabricated case.'
