Judicial Morality: A Paradigm Shift

Former Supreme Court judge Abhay S Oka addressed the critical role of morality in the judiciary at a recent event organized by The Global Jurists. Speaking on the topic 'Morality in Judiciary, A Paradigm or a Paradox', he underscored the importance of judges leaving personal beliefs apart from their duties.

Justice Oka highlighted that a judge must prioritize legal and constitutional correctness over popular opinion. He cited examples where public sentiment could sway proceedings, stressing that judges should maintain focus on legal evidence and constitutional mandates while delivering verdicts.

He further objected to the labeling of trial courts as 'lower' or 'subordinate', arguing these courts are vital to the justice system. Justice Madan B Lokur also contributed to the discussions, reinforcing the independence of the judiciary from societal pressures.
