Twelve Undocumented Foreign Nationals to Appear in Court After N4 Arrests

Twelve undocumented foreign nationals are set to appear in the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court today on charges of contravening the Immigration Act, following their arrest earlier this week as part of a targeted law enforcement operation in Mpumalanga.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 28, were apprehended during Operation Vala Umgodi, a police initiative designed to tackle illegal activities in key corridors across the province. The arrests took place on the busy N4 Road near a mall in Witbank, after South African Police Service (SAPS) combat teams conducted systematic stop-and-search operations in the area on Tuesday.

Operation Vala Umgodi: Clamping Down on Illegal Immigration

Operation Vala Umgodi is part of a broader crackdown on unlawful mining, human trafficking, and immigration violations, focusing on routes known to be used by syndicates and undocumented individuals. During the operation near Witbank, SAPS officers, backed by support teams, stopped several vehicles and performed rigorous checks for identification and travel documents.

It was during these checks that the twelve foreign nationals were found to be without proper documentation required to be in South Africa. The SAPS immediately took the suspects into custody and began investigations into their status.

Collaboration with Home Affairs

In line with South Africa’s multi-agency approach to border security, SAPS investigators worked closely with officials from the Department of Home Affairs to confirm the immigration status of the detainees. Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr.) Zeph Mkhwanazi, expressed appreciation for the diligence and commitment shown by the teams involved in Operation Vala Umgodi.

“We are grateful for the notable and great work done by our team as they execute their duties in relation to Operation Vala Umgodi. Their proactive actions are crucial in enhancing safety and security in the province,” he said.

The Commissioner emphasised that regular operations and interdepartmental cooperation remain a top priority to address not only immigration infractions but also associated crimes that often accompany undocumented migration.

The twelve suspects are now facing charges related to the Contravention of the Immigration Act and will have the opportunity to respond to these charges in court. Their appearance is part of South Africa’s continued efforts to enforce immigration laws and protect the integrity of its borders.
