On Thursday, the Jammu and Kashmir administration's decision to ban 25 books allegedly promoting false narratives and glorifying terrorism stirred mixed reactions among political parties. The BJP endorsed the move, while the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and National Conference (NC) raised concerns about censorship's implications.
BJP leader and Wakf Board chairperson, Darakshan Andrabi, emphasized that terrorism's proliferation in the region wasn't solely through violence but also through literature. She supported the ban as a necessary, albeit overdue, measure.
Conversely, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti argued that democracy relies on open idea exchange, warning that bans amplify division. The CPI-M decried the action as a significant free expression infringement. The ban targets works by authors like Noorani and Arundhati Roy, seen as incendiary by authorities.
