Australia's Asylum Grant to Exiled HK Lawmaker Highlights Human Rights Issues

In a landmark decision, Australia has granted asylum to exiled former Hong Kong legislator Ted Hui, a move he described as acknowledgement of human rights violations committed by Hong Kong authorities since the 2019 pro-democracy protests.

Hui, who fled Hong Kong under a bounty issued by the territory, views the asylum as a key recognition of the democracy and freedom that have been overtaken by governmental actions. In an interview, he expressed his gratitude towards Australia for the support and urged assistance for businessman Jimmy Lai, who is currently facing national security charges in Hong Kong.

The Australian government's decision comes amid strained China-Australia relations, with China labelling Hui an 'anti-China rioter' and calling for noninterference in its internal affairs. The Australian Federal Police are investigating threats against Hui following anonymous letters circulated in South Australia.
