The Karnataka government is considering introducing a 'special category' status for orphaned children to provide them with reservation in education. State Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar revealed this initiative on Wednesday, noting its similarity to the provision extended to persons with disabilities.
Responding during a legislative session, Hebbalkar explained that these children cannot be classified under SC/ST categories as that requires central government approval. Instead, the state is empowered to create a new category due to the relatively small affected population.
The minister assured that her department would make concerted efforts to aid these children's futures. Speaker U T Khader urged further discussions with the Chief Minister for a feasible solution. It was noted that there are currently 712 orphanages in Karnataka, housing over 17,000 children.
