A group of cow vigilantes intercepted a vehicle filled with cattle on Odisha's National Highway 16, releasing the animals before setting the vehicle ablaze, say police officials.
The incident, located near the Nalanga petrol pump in Bhadrak district, caused panic among commuters. Firefighters doused the flames, but the van was severely damaged, confirmed Bhadrak Rural police inspector Dayanidhi Das. The driver evaded capture, and investigations are ongoing.
Traffic disruptions ensued, yet normalcy was restored swiftly after police intervention. The rescued cattle have since been relocated to a gosala in Bhadrak. Aprubar Ranjan Behera, leading the local 'Go Rakshya Samiti,' condemned rampant cattle smuggling and recalled a previous incident where a vigilante was killed by smugglers.
