The Supreme Court has intervened in the legal proceedings against Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad. On Monday, the apex court ruled that the trial court should refrain from examining a chargesheet filed by the Haryana Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ordered the trial court not to frame any charges. The SIT, which was constituted by the Supreme Court, filed both a closure report on one FIR and a chargesheet on another concerning Mahmudabad's social media posts regarding Operation Sindoor.
The Supreme Court had previously expressed concerns over the Haryana SIT's investigation, instructing it to focus solely on the FIRs. The arrest of Mahmudabad on May 18, based on complaints from Renu Bhatia and a village sarpanch, stirred backlash from several political entities and academics.
