Bulgarian authorities have apprehended Igor Grechushkin, a Russian businessman with ties to the devastating 2020 Beirut port explosion that resulted in over 200 fatalities. His arrest comes as Bulgaria acts on Lebanon's extradition request, marking a significant development in a prolonged inquiry riddled with political interference.
The Sofia City Court announced that Grechushkin, a dual citizen with Cyprus, will be held for up to 40 days while Lebanese authorities complete the required extradition documents. This follows a 2020 Interpol notice requested by Lebanon, where Grechushkin's role in the explosion has been under scrutiny.
The investigation into the Beirut blast, marred by setbacks and political pressure, has seen multiple judges replaced. Current judge Tarek Bitar has faced resistance from top politicians. While Bitar has restarted the investigation and interviewed several officials, a preliminary indictment remains pending.
