The Islamabad High Court has deemed the appointment of Retired Major General Hafeezur Rehman as Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) illegal. Justice Babar Sattar highlighted significant flaws in the selection process, which lacked transparency and fairness, ultimately leading to this ruling.
Rehman's appointment was challenged by digital rights activist Usama Khilji, questioning the creation of the role of Member (Administration) and subsequent promotion to Chairman. The court found numerous breaches in the recruitment process, violating both PTA Appointment Rules and the General Clauses Act.
As a result, the court ordered Rehman to step down immediately, appointing the senior-most serving member of the PTA to temporarily assume the role of Chairman until a regular appointment is made by the federal government.
