Nirmal K Kotwal, a senior advocate, has stepped back from representing AAP MLA Mehraj Malik, who was recently detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA). Kotwal made this decision after video evidence emerged, reportedly showing Malik making statements against India's territorial integrity while expressing admiration for militants Burhan Wani and Masood Azhar.
Kotwal emphasized the inviolability of India's unity, asserting that actions undermining national sovereignty are indefensible. Concerns regarding national security prompted his withdrawal, aligning with his commitment to professional ethics and national values. As president of the Jammu wing of the High Court Bar Association, Kotwal underscored his decision's alignment with India's national interests.
Despite being appointed by AAP to lead a legal team challenging Malik's detention, Kotwal clarified that the video's content was unknown during his initial briefing. Upon learning through social media, he expressed that the statements were insensitive and in violation of national security principles, motivating his resignation from the case.
