South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has successfully concluded a working visit to Los Angeles, California, as part of the country’s proactive economic diplomacy agenda. The trip was aimed at deepening partnerships in creative industries, strengthening ties with the South African diaspora, and promoting South Africa as a hub for investment and cultural collaboration.

Showcasing South Africa’s Creative Power

According to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), the visit placed South Africa’s vibrant film, music, and arts sectors at the centre of discussions. By leveraging Los Angeles’s role as a global leader in entertainment and cultural industries, South Africa sought to position itself as a top destination for international co-productions and cultural exchange.

The department stressed that cultural diplomacy is becoming a crucial component of South Africa’s foreign policy, serving not only as a tool to strengthen international relations but also to attract investment into creative sectors that generate employment and economic opportunities.

Engaging the Diaspora for Strategic Partnerships

During his time in Los Angeles, Minister Lamola engaged with influential members of the South African diaspora community, including executives, entrepreneurs, academics, and creatives. DIRCO described this community as an “underutilised cultural diplomatic asset” that could be harnessed to enhance South Africa’s global influence.

“Mobilising the diaspora amplifies South Africa’s soft power, strengthens its international brand, and fosters invaluable business and innovation linkages,” the department noted.

The Minister’s engagements also included meetings with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC). These discussions focused on strengthening public-private partnerships and aligning South Africa’s investment offerings with California’s innovation-driven and sustainability-focused economy.

Lamola highlighted investment opportunities in renewable energy, technology, and tourism—sectors where South Africa’s development priorities converge with California’s expertise in clean energy, digital innovation, and global entertainment.

The visit concluded with a high-profile outreach event at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council and Town Hall, where Minister Lamola underscored South Africa’s foreign policy principles. He reiterated that national interest remains at the heart of South Africa’s international engagement.

This includes addressing poverty, unemployment, and inequality at home, while also promoting global democracy, multilateralism, adherence to international law, and the pursuit of peace.

Looking Ahead to the UN General Assembly

DIRCO confirmed that Minister Lamola will now head to New York to participate in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). There, he is expected to engage with like-minded nations to spotlight pressing global issues, from peace and security to equitable development and climate action.
