The United Nations has declared that aid workers are in a 'race against time' as they work to clear rubble and rebuild eastern Afghanistan after a catastrophic earthquake hit last month. The disaster resulted in the loss of at least 2,200 lives and isolated remote communities.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck on August 31, causing extensive damage in Kunar province, a rugged region that poses challenges for rescue efforts. Authorities have resorted to deploying helicopters and airdropping commandos to offer relief.
According to UNDP's Devanand Ramiah, the focus is on safely initiating debris removal and reconstruction. Assistance in cash, food, and essentials is being provided, while international aid aims to build sustainable housing in future recovery phases.
