In a tragic incident Monday, at least 24 individuals, including women and children, lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries when explosive materials detonated at a compound owned by the Pakistani Taliban in northwest Pakistan, police reported.
The explosion occurred in the Tirah Valley's Matur Dara area, located in Khyber district within the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, along the Afghan border. Authorities clarified that the blast was due to explosives intended for bomb-making, countering rumors about aerial bombardments by Pakistani jets.
The compound, home to numerous local and Afghan militant operatives, was a significant site for IED production and militant training. Accumulating explosives within civilian vicinities has posed severe risks, often leading to unintentional detonations. The rise in terrorism incidents since the Taliban's 2021 Kabul takeover has intensified concerns within Pakistan.
