More than a year has passed since the tragic stampede in Hathras claimed the lives of 121 individuals, primarily women and children. On Friday, ongoing court proceedings focused on establishing accountability for the deaths. Lawyers confirmed that the next cross-examination date is set for October 9.
The disaster occurred on July 2, 2024, during a religious gathering led by self-styled godman Bhole Baba near Mugalgadhi and Phulrai villages. Eleven people, including key organizer Devprakash Madhukar, have been named in the police charge sheet as responsible for the mishap, yet all remain on bail as legal proceedings continue.
The defense argued that administrative lapses were to blame for the tragic event, citing unaltered traffic routes and slippery grounds due to rain. On Friday, a former police inspector and Circle Officer provided statements via video. The defense maintains the incident was an accident caused by the district administration's failures.
