BJP Coordination Committee Challenges Mizoram's Plans on District Councils

The BJP Coordination Committee, representing the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in Mizoram—Lai, Mara, and Chakma—staunchly opposed the state government's recommendations to amalgamate and downsize departments within the councils. This comes amid concerns that such actions would undermine their effective functioning.

The committee submitted a memorandum to Governor Gen Vijay Kumar Singh (retd), urging him to direct the Zoram People's Movement government to provide proportional fund allocations for the ADCs. The 2011 state notification had mandated such allocations to bolster decentralized governance, but the committee alleges these directives remain unfulfilled.

Highlighting severe fund constraints resulting from non-allocation, the committee warned that the proposed changes would exacerbate inefficiencies not due to overstaffing, but from state departments' overlapping roles. They reaffirmed the constitutional rights of the Lai, Mara, and Chakma communities under the Sixth Schedule, vowing strong resistance to any actions weakening their councils.
