The UN's refugee chief, Filippo Grandi, has pointed a critical finger at the Trump administration's deportation practices, suggesting they may breach international law. In a speech, Grandi decried a global 'backlash' against migrants and refugees, while also noting significant funding cuts that have slashed UNHCR's workforce by nearly a quarter this year.

Grandi praised some glimmers of hope, including peace efforts led by the U.S. in the Congo. Yet, he warned against debating the principles of the UN Refugee Convention, asserting that national sovereignty and the right to asylum complement each other. He expressed concerns about the deterioration of international law respect, especially in developed countries.

With most refugees being hosted in poorer nations, Grandi's call to action comes amidst the UNHCR's budget being halved to USD 5 billion, even as refugee numbers spike. He ended on a hopeful note about potential stability and refugee returns, notably among Syrian repatriates and Congolese displaced by conflict.
