DRI Seizes Rs 1.58 Crore Worth of Crystal Meth at Calicut Airport

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) made a significant bust at Calicut International Airport, confiscating crystal methamphetamine valued at approximately Rs 1.58 crore. The seizure occurred when officers intercepted a passenger who had arrived from Muscat on Friday. This operation was backed by specific intelligence and carried out by the Calicut and Kannur units of the DRI's Cochin Zonal Unit.

Upon inspection, officers discovered 1,974 grams of the banned substance cunningly concealed within food packets in the passenger's checked baggage. The individual, reportedly from Malappuram district, was promptly arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Investigators are now working to trace the origin of the drugs and uncover any larger smuggling network involved.

This incident is not isolated; a similar case was reported on March 2, when the DRI seized 1.931 kg of crystal meth from a passenger at the same airport. Over the last fiscal year, the DRI's Cochin Zonal Unit has confiscated narcotic drugs worth Rs 70.76 crore in Kerala, leading to the arrest of 21 individuals nationwide.
