China has firmly denied any involvement with the Iranian cargo ship seized by the US in the Gulf, which is alleged to have been transporting chemical materials for missile production. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun dismissed the association following accusations by former US envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley.
Haley claimed the ship, allegedly en route from China to Iran, carried chemical shipments for missiles. The incident saw US forces intercept the cargo ship after it refused commands to halt, leading to strained US-Iran relations and warnings from the Iranian military of possible retaliation.
The diplomatic friction complicates US-China relations further, as it coincides with trade tensions, and speculation over China's military ties with Iran. The situation also clouds the prospect of upcoming US-Iran peace talks, with Iran yet to confirm participation.
