The Vice President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, today inaugurated the Amrit Mahotsava celebrations marking the 75th birth anniversary of Pujya Dr. Basavalinga Pattadevaru Mahaswamiji of Hiremath Samsthan at Sri Channabasavashram in Bhalki, Karnataka’s Bidar district. The event brought together spiritual leaders, scholars, and devotees to commemorate the life and enduring contributions of the revered seer.

Addressing a large gathering, the Vice President described Bidar as a historic cradle of spiritual thought, social reform, and learning, noting that the region continues to carry forward a rich legacy of inclusivity and progressive philosophy.

Basavanna’s Ideals Remain Timeless

Recalling the teachings of the 12th-century philosopher-saint Basavanna, Shri Radhakrishnan highlighted his pioneering role in promoting equality and challenging social hierarchies. He emphasized that the Anubhava Mantapa—widely regarded as the world’s first spiritual and democratic forum—remains a powerful symbol of dialogue, inclusivity, and social reform.

“The ideals of Basavanna continue to inspire generations to build a society rooted in equality, justice, and compassion,” the Vice President said, adding that these principles are more relevant than ever in today’s world.

Tribute to a Life of Service and Compassion

Paying homage to Pujya Dr. Basavalinga Pattadevaru Mahaswamiji, the Vice President described him as a living embodiment of service (seva) and compassion. He lauded the Swamiji’s lifelong commitment to uplifting the marginalized, particularly his work in providing shelter, education, and dignity to over 500 orphaned and abandoned children.

He also highlighted the remarkable expansion of the Hiremath Samsthan’s educational initiatives under Swamiji’s guidance, noting that the institution now runs more than 60 educational establishments serving over 20,000 students across the region.

“This is not just service—it is nation-building at the grassroots level,” he remarked.

“Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi”: Development Rooted in Heritage

Linking the occasion to India’s broader developmental vision, the Vice President referred to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s call for “Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi” (development alongside heritage). He emphasized that India’s progress must remain anchored in its cultural and spiritual foundations.

He noted that India today is emerging as a technologically advanced and economically robust nation, while continuing to draw strength from its civilizational ethos. According to him, the renewed focus on heritage conservation, yoga, and traditional knowledge systems has strengthened national pride and cultural confidence.

“These efforts go beyond preserving monuments—they restore identity, self-belief, and a connection to our timeless values,” he said.

Nari Shakti Central to Nation-Building

Highlighting the importance of women’s empowerment, Shri Radhakrishnan underscored that Nari Shakti is a cornerstone of India’s growth story. He observed that women bring empathy, resilience, and ethical leadership to every sphere of life.

“When women rise, families prosper, communities become stronger, and the nation moves forward,” he stated, calling for continued efforts to ensure equal opportunities and leadership roles for women.

Call for a Compassionate and Just Society

The Vice President urged citizens to draw inspiration from the teachings of both Basavanna and Pujya Swamiji to build a society grounded in equality, compassion, and dharma. He emphasized the need for collective responsibility in addressing social challenges and fostering harmony.

In a broader remark touching upon national discourse, Shri Radhakrishnan stressed the importance of clarity in distinguishing between right and wrong, stating that there must be no ambiguity in identifying and confronting threats such as terrorism.

A Celebration of Spiritual Legacy

The Amrit Mahotsava celebrations at Sri Channabasavashram stand as a tribute not only to the life of Pujya Dr. Basavalinga Pattadevaru Mahaswamiji but also to the enduring relevance of India’s spiritual and reformist traditions.

As India continues its journey toward becoming a global leader, the Vice President’s address highlighted a central message: true progress lies in harmonizing modern development with the wisdom of the past—ensuring that growth remains inclusive, ethical, and deeply rooted in the nation’s cultural soul.
