In a significant rescue operation, Libya's eastern-based coast guard, under the Libyan National Army's control, saved at least 404 migrants stranded on boats near Tobruk, according to the Tobruk Red Crescent on Wednesday.
The Red Crescent reported that these migrants, from diverse nationalities, were found in dire conditions. Volunteers swiftly provided them with first aid, food, and blankets, as shared in images on their official Facebook page.
Libya serves as a critical transit point for migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, who embark on perilous journeys to Europe in search of safer circumstances and a better life. Tragically, 10 migrants died when their boat overturned near Tobruk, with 31 still missing, underscoring the perils faced by those fleeing conflict and poverty.
