South Africa's president announced the precautionary suspension of police chief Fannie Masemola on Thursday over allegations of misappropriating public funds in awarding a healthcare contract worth 228 million rand ($13.80 million).
Masemola, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, faces charges following a national corruption inquiry involving Medicare24. President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the necessity of ensuring accountability and devising preventive measures against office resource misuse and theft.
Amid these allegations, Puleng Dimpane has been installed as the acting police chief while Masemola is accused of violating the Public Finance Management Act.
