European lawmakers have criticized China following the abrupt cancellation of Taiwan President William Lai's planned diplomatic trip to Eswatini. The cancellation, reportedly due to pressure from Beijing, saw Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar withdrawing overflight permissions just a day before Lai's departure, according to The Taipei Times.

German MP Klaus-Peter Willsch expressed concerns over China's expanding geopolitical pressure on global aviation, warning that political interference in airspace access undermines the principles of the International Civil Aviation Organisation and violates the Chicago Convention. Italian lawmakers also voiced their objections, with Senate Vice President Gian Marco Centinaio and others condemning the incident as coercive diplomacy that could set a dangerous precedent.

European representative offices in Taipei, including the French Office and the German Institute, underscored that airspace management should prioritize safety and stability over political agendas. The incident highlights the complex geopolitical situation surrounding China's claim over Taiwan, a long-standing issue rooted in historical, political, and legal conflicts.
