The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is ramping up match-day rail services across Gauteng this weekend as thousands of soccer and rugby supporters prepare to travel to major sporting fixtures in Soweto and Pretoria.

The expanded transport operation forms part of PRASA’s broader effort to reposition passenger rail as a reliable, affordable and accessible mobility solution for large-scale public events while easing road congestion and improving commuter safety.

PRASA Group CEO Hishaam Emeran said the agency is committed to supporting South Africa’s sporting culture by providing convenient transport options for fans attending high-profile matches.

“A big weekend of sport deserves a big response from us,” Emeran said on Friday.

“We are proud to be the most affordable mobility partner of choice for South African sports fans, bringing people to the game safely, affordably and on time.”

The initiative comes as PRASA continues efforts to rebuild public confidence in rail transport following years of infrastructure vandalism, service disruptions and operational challenges that severely affected commuter rail networks across the country.

Orlando Pirates Fans to Benefit From Dedicated Soweto Rail Services

On Saturday, Orlando Pirates supporters travelling to Orlando Stadium for the Betway Premiership clash against Durban City FC will have access to dedicated PRASA shuttle services operating across several major corridors.

The highly anticipated fixture at Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto is expected to draw large crowds as Pirates continue their domestic campaign.

PRASA confirmed that special services will operate from:

  • Midway corridor

  • Naledi corridor

  • Johannesburg corridor

Train services from the Johannesburg–Midway corridor will commence at 12:00, while additional shuttle operations between Naledi–New Canada and Midway–New Canada will begin at 13:15.

Services are scheduled to continue until 19:00 to accommodate post-match commuter movement.

Transport planners say rail services remain one of the most efficient ways to move large numbers of supporters into densely populated event zones such as Soweto while reducing traffic congestion and parking pressure around stadium precincts.

Bulls Rugby Clash Spurs Pretoria Rail Expansion

PRASA is also deploying enhanced rail operations in Pretoria for Saturday’s United Rugby Championship encounter between the Vodacom Bulls and Italy’s Benetton Rugby at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The match is expected to attract significant local and regional attendance as South African franchises continue competing in the international tournament.

Rugby supporters travelling to Loftus Versfeld will have access to train departures every 20 minutes between 13:00 and 19:30.

PRASA said the rail network will be integrated with:

  • Gautrain connections

  • E-hailing services

  • Pretoria Station commuter links

The integrated mobility approach reflects growing efforts to modernise public transport coordination for major sporting events.

Urban mobility analysts say successful event-based rail operations could help demonstrate the long-term viability of rail revitalisation projects currently underway in key metropolitan corridors.

CAF Champions League Final Spurs Additional Services

On Sunday, PRASA will further expand operations for one of the continent’s biggest football fixtures as Mamelodi Sundowns host Morocco’s AS FAR in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final at Loftus Versfeld.

The match is expected to draw thousands of football supporters from across Gauteng and beyond.

Special train services will operate from multiple corridors including:

  • Saulsville

  • Pienaarspoort

  • De Wildt

  • Mabopane

Supporters will be transported to Pretoria Station before connecting to shuttle trains operating directly to Loftus Station.

Shuttle frequencies will run every 20 minutes between 13:00 and 19:30.

The operation represents one of PRASA’s largest coordinated sporting transport deployments in recent months and forms part of broader efforts to restore commuter confidence in passenger rail services.

PRASA Seeks to Rebuild Rail Culture Through Sports Partnerships

The weekend’s large-scale transport initiative highlights PRASA’s growing strategy of leveraging major public events to drive rail usage and reconnect communities to commuter train networks.

Sports events have increasingly become important opportunities for rail operators globally to showcase efficiency, affordability and crowd-management capability.

In South Africa, PRASA has been working to restore services on key corridors following years of infrastructure damage caused by vandalism, cable theft and underinvestment.

Recent investments in station upgrades, corridor rehabilitation and security enhancements are aimed at restoring rail as a central pillar of urban mobility.

Transport economists say successful sports-event rail operations can play a significant role in rebuilding public trust and demonstrating operational improvements.

Affordable Public Transport Critical for Sports Accessibility

PRASA’s expanded services also address growing concerns over rising transport costs for sports supporters attending major events.

With fuel prices, private transport costs and parking expenses continuing to rise, affordable rail access is increasingly viewed as essential to maintaining inclusive attendance at sporting events.

Emeran stressed that PRASA aims to ensure fans can attend matches safely and cost-effectively.

“Whether you’re heading to Orlando Stadium [or] Loftus Versfeld — PRASA is there for you,” he said.

The agency’s focus on affordability aligns with broader national efforts to encourage public transport usage while reducing congestion and emissions in urban centres.

Rail Revival Seen as Key Economic and Urban Priority

Government has repeatedly identified rail revitalisation as a strategic economic and infrastructure priority capable of improving productivity, reducing transport inequality and supporting urban development.

Efficient passenger rail systems are viewed as critical to:

  • Lowering commuter transport costs

  • Reducing traffic congestion

  • Supporting economic mobility

  • Improving environmental sustainability

  • Enhancing public safety

The success of large-scale operations such as this weekend’s sports services may offer an important indicator of PRASA’s operational recovery and its capacity to handle high-demand commuter movements.

As South Africa continues rebuilding critical transport infrastructure, major sporting events are increasingly becoming both logistical tests and symbolic showcases for the future of public rail transport.
