In a significant disagreement, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi opposed the appointment of Raj Kumar Goyal as the chief information commissioner (CIC), according to RTI-minutes of the selection committee meeting.
Suggesting three alternative candidates, Gandhi highlighted their diverse expertise and long-standing public service record, proposing IAS officer Sumita Dawra, Justice S Muralidhar, and Professor Faizan Mustafa.
Despite Gandhi's proposals, the government finalized Goyal's appointment. The meeting included Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other key officials. Goyal's appointment was officially notified on December 15, 2025.
