In a significant step toward revitalising India’s traditional crafts ecosystem, the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India (CCIC), under the Ministry of Textiles, has launched its inaugural heritage designer collection titled “Soul Threads.”

The exclusive exhibition, being held from April 24 to May 10, 2026, at CCIC’s flagship showroom in Jawahar Vyapar Bhawan, Janpath, signals a renewed push to position India’s handcrafted legacy within contemporary design and global markets.

A Revival Milestone for CCIC

The launch of “Soul Threads” marks a major milestone in CCIC’s revival journey, as the organisation seeks to re-establish itself as a premier platform for showcasing India’s rich artisanal heritage.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mrs. Neelam Shami Rao, IAS, Secretary (Textiles), in the presence of senior dignitaries including:

  • Shri Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Department of Rural Development

  • Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handloom)

  • Ms. Amrit Raj, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts)

  • Shri Akhilesh Kumar, Chairman, CCIC

  • Cmde Rajiv Ashok, Managing Director, CCIC

Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening the handloom and handicrafts sector, which supports millions of artisans across India.

Showcasing India’s Finest Craft Traditions

The “Soul Threads” exhibition brings together an exclusive and curated range of artisanal creations, including:

  • Handwoven and designer sarees

  • Bespoke apparel blending tradition with modern design

  • Intricately crafted artisanal jewellery

  • Handcrafted home furnishings

Each piece reflects India’s diverse textile heritage, from regional weaving techniques to traditional motifs, reinterpreted for contemporary tastes.

Tradition Meets Contemporary Design

A key highlight of the collection is its ability to bridge heritage and modernity.

Designers have drawn inspiration from:

  • Indigenous textile traditions

  • Regional craftsmanship

  • Cultural narratives embedded in fabrics

These elements have been reimagined into contemporary silhouettes and design formats, making them relevant for today’s global audience.

Fashion and Culture on Display

The inaugural evening featured:

  • A preview of the heritage collection

  • A fashion show showcasing curated designs

  • Cultural performances by folk artists, celebrating India’s diverse artistic traditions

The integration of fashion and performing arts created a holistic experience, reinforcing the cultural depth behind each handcrafted product.

Empowering Artisans and Designers

“Soul Threads” is designed not just as an exhibition, but as a platform for collaboration and recognition, aiming to:

  • Provide visibility to master artisans and craft clusters

  • Enable partnerships between designers and traditional craftsmen

  • Promote sustainable livelihoods in the handloom and handicrafts sector

India’s handicrafts and handloom sectors employ over 7 million artisans, many of whom depend on platforms like CCIC to access national and international markets.

Boosting India’s Creative Economy

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to:

  • Promote “Vocal for Local” and Atmanirbhar Bharat

  • Expand India’s footprint in the global textile and design market

  • Strengthen creative and cultural industries

With global demand for sustainable and handcrafted products on the rise, India’s artisanal sector is uniquely positioned to benefit from such initiatives.

Reimagining CCIC for the Future

Once a flagship institution for promoting Indian crafts, CCIC is now undergoing a strategic revival focused on:

  • Curated exhibitions and designer collaborations

  • Enhanced retail experiences

  • Integration with modern branding and digital outreach

“Soul Threads” is expected to serve as a template for future initiatives, blending heritage with innovation.

As India’s creative industries gain global attention, platforms like CCIC are playing a crucial role in ensuring that traditional craftsmanship not only survives but thrives in a modern economy.

The “Soul Threads” exhibition stands as a celebration of India’s timeless artistry—reimagined for a new generation of consumers.
