Extension Granted to West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta

The tenure of West Bengal's top police officer, Siddh Nath Gupta, has been extended by six months following a review of electoral readiness by the Election Commission. Gupta, an IPS officer from the 1992 batch, was originally set to retire on April 30, but will now remain in service until later in the year.

This decision, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, highlights the importance of ensuring smooth policing during the ongoing assembly elections. Gupta was appointed as the state's Director General and Inspector General of Police on March 16, a day after the incumbent, Peeyush Pandey, was removed from the post.

The extended tenure allows Gupta to oversee the first phase of polls held on April 23 and the upcoming final voting phase on April 29, with results to be announced on May 4. The Cabinet's extension is a move aimed at maintaining public interest and effective law enforcement during the crucial electoral period.
