Supreme Court Halts Land Takeover for Asaram Ashram Amidst Commonwealth Games Plans

The Supreme Court on Monday enforced a status quo until May 4 on land associated with Asaram's ashram in Ahmedabad. This land is earmarked for developing sports infrastructure by the Gujarat government in preparation for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Spanning over 45,000 square meters near the Narendra Modi Stadium, the land's ownership has become contentious as the Sant Shri Asharam Trust, which manages the ashram, contests the Gujarat High Court's April 17 verdict favoring the government's acquisition plans.
The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta appeared to find discrepancies in the issued notices to the Trust, prompting a re-evaluation. Until the next hearing, demolition or coercive actions against the property are prohibited.
