Delhi's Juvenile Crime Surge: An In-depth Analysis

Delhi has maintained its edge in the grim statistics of juvenile crime for 2024, topping the charts among metropolitan cities across India. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the city witnessed 2,306 cases involving minors, also known as "Child in Conflict with the Law," maintaining its lead over other metros.

The most prevalent crimes committed by juveniles included theft, with 526 incidents, snatching, attempts to murder, and robbery not far behind. Offences affecting human body were numbered at 569 while property-related crimes reached 1,027, marking them as dominant categories within juvenile offenses. The NCRB data further revealed the stark nature of offenses, including 144 murder cases.

The societal backdrop of these statistics unveils a concerning trend -- a large number of the apprehended juveniles were dropouts or had minimal education, with many living in challenging conditions. Efforts toward addressing the underlying causes of juvenile delinquency have thus emerged as a critical need in metropolitan policy frameworks.
