Crisis in Haiti: Hospitals Evacuate Amid Deadly Gang Warfare
As gang violence intensifies in Haiti's Cite Soleil, hospitals have evacuated, and Doctors Without Borders has suspended operations. This comes amidst ongoing fighting between rival gangs near the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to mass displacements. A planned U.N.-backed security deployment faces challenges as insecurity delays upcoming elections.
In a bid to ensure safety, hospitals in Haiti's Cite Soleil region have evacuated patients as escalating gang battles continue to terrorize the area. Doctors Without Borders has also suspended its operations, citing the inability to protect staff and patients from the relentless gunfire.
This surge in violence has forced over 5,000 residents to flee their homes in recent weeks, according to the U.N. Such upheaval follows the withdrawal of a Kenyan-led security mission from the country. The Haitian government plans a new security deployment, yet its future funding and personnel remain uncertain.
With the country's prime minister acknowledging ongoing insecurity, planned elections in August are unlikely. Haiti has not held elections since 2016, and the assassination of its president in 2021 has further compounded its political instability.
