A 27-year-old man suspected of planning a violent attack and attempting to join the Islamic State in Syria or Mozambique was aiming to target a Paris museum and the Jewish community, a source close to the investigation reported on Monday.
According to the French newspaper Le Monde, the suspect, who was arrested on Thursday, had considered the Louvre and the Jewish community in Paris' 16th arrondissement as potential targets. Notably, security gaps at the Louvre, the world's most-visited museum, were exposed last October when burglars stole $102 million worth of jewels.
The suspect's arrest comes against a backdrop of rising antisemitic acts in France and across Europe, a situation intensified by the escalation in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel.
