The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially taken control of the high-profile murder case involving Chandranath Rath, the aide to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Rath was assassinated on May 6, just after the state's hotly contested assembly election results were announced. In a move to ensure neutrality, the CBI stepped in following a direct request from the West Bengal government.

In their investigation process, the CBI has re-registered the state police's First Information Report (FIR) as its own, marking the initiation of federal-level scrutiny. The fate of the investigation remains undecided, as the CBI's independent probe will determine the veracity of the allegations, concluding with a final report or potential charges.

The local police had previously detained three individuals from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, after tracing a UPI transaction linked to the suspects at a toll plaza. The wrongful identification of one suspect had initially caused confusion. As of now, it is believed that at least eight people orchestrated the murder plot, with detailed planning preceding the attack on Rath.
