Tensions Rise: Iran-Kuwait Maritime Confrontation at Bubiyan Island
Four individuals linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guards were arrested by Kuwait for attempting to infiltrate the Gulf state by sea. Iran opposed the arrest, claiming a navigational error led them into Kuwaiti waters. Kuwait insists it has the right to defend its sovereignty, citing Article 51 of the U.N. Charter.
In a significant development, Kuwait's interior ministry revealed on Tuesday the arrest of four individuals associated with Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The suspects were apprehended while allegedly attempting to breach the Gulf state's maritime borders, according to the state news agency KUNA.
The incident sparked a diplomatic row as Iran condemned the arrests, arguing the individuals were on a maritime patrol and entered Kuwaiti waters due to navigation issues, not as an act of aggression. Tehran dismissed claims of planning hostile actions, calling for access to the detained nationals through their embassy in Kuwait.
During the conflict, a member of the Kuwaiti armed forces sustained injuries. The foreign ministry took formal action by summoning Iran's ambassador and issuing a protest over what it termed as an infiltration of Bubiyan Island by the Revolutionary Guards. Bubiyan Island, Kuwait's largest coastal island, holds strategic importance in the northwest of the Gulf.
