Delhi HC Demands Big Tech Crackdown on Obscene Apps

The Delhi High Court has instructed Google and Apple to take decisive steps against mobile applications disseminating pornographic content on their platforms, citing the potential harm to future generations. The court emphasized that social media intermediaries must act not only on complaints but also proactively at the time of content upload to ensure compliance.

Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya, along with Justice Tejas Karia, stated that under the current legal framework, these online giants have a critical role in curbing such content. The court also urged the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team to monitor these issues closely.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation led by Rubika Thapa against apps offering explicit content. The plea points out the immense revenue generated by such applications and their misuse for blackmail, emphasizing violations of IT laws. The court has summoned an action-taken report from the concerned parties.
