On Wednesday, VCK MLA Vanni Arasu passionately addressed the Tamil Nadu Assembly, urging the newly formed government to enact stringent legislation against superstitious practices. Arasu cited effective laws in states like Karnataka and Maharashtra, framing his argument within the context of reducing exploitation under the guise of black magic.
During his discourse on the confidence motion, Arasu underscored existing laws in states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Rajasthan that combat witchcraft and sorcery. He referenced rationalist Narendra Dabholkar's advocacy for similar reforms in Maharashtra before his assassination.
Beyond the mandate against superstition, Arasu emphasized the need for legislation against honour killings and a promotion system for SC/ST employees. Additionally, he called for a permanent solution for the safety of Tamil Nadu fishermen and advocated for the recognition of May 18 as International Genocide Day.
