The Centre has extended the tenure of CBI chief Praveen Sood for another year in a decision announced on Wednesday. This marks Sood's second extension as head of the Central Bureau of Investigation.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension based on the selection committee's recommendations, prolonging Sood's leadership until May 24, 2026. Previously, Sood commenced his role as CBI director on May 25, 2023, serving a two-year term before receiving his first extension last year.
The decision was made during a selection committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with participation from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi expressed strong dissent, critiquing the selection process as biased.
